A cathode ray tube is made of two main glass parts: the front panel, which is the screen you look at, and the funnel-shaped back end that narrows into the neck where the electron gun sits. During manufacturing the air is evacuated from the sealed envelope, leaving a near-vacuum inside. Because of that, the full weight of the atmosphere presses inward on the glass from every direction, and the glass has to be thick to withstand the load. The funnel glass in particular is loaded with lead, up to roughly 25% lead oxide, to shield viewers from the radiation produced by the electron beam. Why the vacuum release is the dangerous moment

When the sealed envelope of a CRT is opened, the pressure difference does the damage. Air rushes into the tube, and the glass, which has been held in tension by the vacuum, can shatter violently. This is the implosion hazard that makes CRT recycling risky. If the tube is cut or broken carelessly, the result can be flying glass, lead dust, and phosphor powder scattered across the work area.   • Vacuum release. As the crack opens along the score line, air enters the tube and the pressure equalizes. Because the glass is clamped in place and the break follows the scored line, the release is contained. There is no uncontrolled implosion: the tube simply opens along the cut, and the panel separates from the funnel.
  • Dust collection. The dust collector captures glass particles and phosphor powder at the source, so lead dust does not spread through the facility.
  • Separation and downstream handling. The panel glass, which is low in lead, and the funnel glass, which is high in lead, are separated into different streams. The glass crushing workbench breaks the separated glass into manageable pieces, and the belt conveyor moves them along the line for further processing.

The whole cycle takes about 25 seconds per monitor, and the machine handles CRTs from 14 to 29 inches.

Why the diamond blade makes the difference

The diamond blade is not a marketing gimmick. CRT glass is hard, around 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and it is dense because of the lead content. A steel blade dulls quickly, chips the glass, and produces rough edges that release dust. A carbide blade lasts longer but still wears out after roughly a thousand cuts. A diamond blade stays sharp for thousands of cuts and produces a clean score line, which means a clean break and far less dust.
