How does a crt cutter with ni-chrome heater handle the stress relief in CRT glass

Every cathode ray tube is built from two very different pieces of glass. The front panel is a lead-free glass that you look through, while the funnel behind it is a heavily leaded glass, typically carrying more than 20% lead oxide, that shields viewers from radiation. The two are fused together along a thin band of frit solder. Because the panel and the funnel expand and contract at different rates, a zone of internal stress is locked into every tube right where the two glasses meet.
That locked-in stress is the reason a CRT cannot simply be smashed apart. When a tube is broken with brute force, the stress is released all at once, and the glass shatters unpredictably, sending sharp fragments and lead-laden dust across the work area and mixing leaded and unleaded glass so thoroughly that neither stream can be recycled cleanly. The whole job of a CRT cutter is to release that stress in a controlled way, along a single intended line.
In CRT recycling, stress relief does not mean annealing the glass back to a zero-stress state. It means managing the release of the built-in stress so the tube separates cleanly at the panel-funnel junction. A crt cutter with ni-chrome heater achieves this by heating a narrow band of glass to a temperature where it softens, not melts, so the stress is released progressively along the heated line instead of violently.
The cutting process is straightforward. The tube is clamped in place and a thin ni-chrome wire is positioned exactly where the panel meets the funnel. When current flows through the wire, it heats quickly and evenly, because ni-chrome, a nickel-chromium alloy, has high electrical resistance and resists oxidation even at red heat. The wire raises the glass along the cut line to its softening point. Because the heat is applied locally and evenly, the thermal differential is created only where it is wanted. The softened band yields first, and a gentle mechanical push is enough to separate the panel from the funnel along the heated line. The result is two clean pieces of glass, a leaded funnel and a low-lead panel, each ready for its own recycling route.
Evenness is the detail that matters most for stress control. If the heating were uneven, some parts of the glass would soften before others, and the stress would be released in a lopsided way, which is exactly how cracks run off line and tubes shatter. Ni-chrome wire heats uniformly along its full length, with no hot or cold spots, so the softening front advances evenly and the crack follows the wire. This is why ni-chrome heater equipment has become the standard choice for CRT cutting rather than open flames or mechanical scoring.
The machine also manages stress by controlling the rate of heating and cooling. Large tubes carry more stored stress and need a slightly longer heat-up so the glass can absorb the temperature change gradually. Second, yield: panel glass and funnel glass come out cleanly separated, so each stream can be sold or processed on its own instead of being downgraded to mixed cullet. Third, speed: a single machine can process a steady flow of tubes through the working day, which matters when the yard is handling hundreds of units a week.
