Two machines are commonly used to tame it: the hydraulic briquetter and the hydraulic baler. They both compress material, but they are not interchangeable. What Each Machine Does

A hydraulic briquetter forces loose, fine, or granular material into a die under high pressure and pushes out a solid, 3D block called a briquette. It works best on powders, flakes, and films that would simply fall apart inside a baler. A hydraulic baler, in contrast, uses a horizontal or vertical ram to squeeze bulky, loose scrap into large flat bales tied with wire or strapping. Balers are built for volume and handling, not for density.

The distinction matters because plastic waste is rarely one single form. A recycling plant may handle shredded film, regrind flakes, dust from filtration, and whole items such as containers or e-waste housings. Each form calls for a different approach.

Why Fine Plastic Waste Belongs in a Briquetter

Flakes, regrind, and film are the hardest plastic waste to manage. They blow away, spill, and cost a lot to ship per tonne because they are mostly air. A briquetter solves this by giving the particles a solid, stable shape. Take the thin separator film that comes out of lithium battery recycling: it is light, slippery, and nearly impossible to stack loose. A plastic hydraulic briquetter presses this kind of film into dense blocks with a volume compression ratio of around 10:1, turning a handling headache into a product that is easy to store, load, and transport.

Briquetted plastic is also easier to sell. Dense blocks feed more steadily into grinders, extruders, or energy recovery systems, and buyers prefer them because they handle like a solid material rather than a loose pile.

Where a Baler Is Usually the Better Choice

A hydraulic baler earns its keep on bulky items: whole containers, crates, pipes, and large pieces that cannot be turned into powder or flakes. It quickly reduces the volume of a stream of loose scrap and packages it into tied bales that a forklift can move. For mixed and awkward plastic waste, a hydraulic baler is simpler and more forgiving than a briquetter, which needs a consistent feed of fine material.

Because bales stay loose inside, they reach only moderate density. That is usually fine for bulky waste, but it means a baler will not give you the space savings or the premium price that a true briquette can on fine plastic.

Using the Right Machine in a Modern Plastic Recycling Line

Most real plants need both. The key is matching the machine to the fraction of the stream. After shredding and separation, a plant will typically end up with two output types: heavy bulky pieces and light fine material. The bulky fraction can go to a baler, while fines, flakes, and film should be routed to a briquetter. In lithium battery and film-heavy recycling operations, a plastic pneumatic conveying system can collect light film from the separation step and carry it directly to a plastic hydraulic briquetter, so the loose, airy material never has to be handled by hand.

This integrated setup removes the biggest bottleneck in plastic recycling: the slow, dusty task of moving loose material. Conveying and pressing run as a continuous process, and the operator is left with clean, dense briquettes ready for sale.

How to Choose

Before buying either machine, ask yourself three questions. First, what form is my plastic waste in? Fine, powdery, or film waste points to a briquetter; bulky mixed scrap points to a baler. Second, what do I want the output to be? If you plan to sell the material for remelting or reuse, dense briquettes command a better return; if you mainly want cheap volume reduction and easy stacking, a baler may be enough. Third, how consistent is the feed? A briquetter works best with a steady stream of fine material, often delivered by a pneumatic conveying system, while a baler tolerates variation.

If your plant handles multiple forms of plastic, plan for both. Briquette the fines and film, bale the bulky fraction, and you turn a messy waste problem into a tidy, valuable output.
