Tackling the most hazardous stream: used lead acid batteries

Used lead acid batteries are among the most dangerous items in the e-waste stream. Left untreated, lead and sulphuric acid can leak into the soil and groundwater, putting both ecosystems and people at risk. Sustainable management of this stream is built on three things: safe breaking, clean smelting and strict control of emissions.

San Lan's lead acid battery recycling equipment starts by safely cutting each battery into sections and draining the acid, with the hydraulic cutter completing each cycle in about 45 seconds. A breaking and separation system then sorts the material into four recoverable products, lead grid, lead paste, PVC/PP plastic and hard rubber. On the smelting side, a rotary furnace reduces lead paste into crude metallic lead with a recovery rate higher than conventional blast furnaces, and a blast furnace option reaches up to 1,800°C with a lead recovery rate of 95%. A de-sulfurization unit removes sulfur from the lead paste before melting, which lowers the melting temperature, cuts SO2 emissions and saves energy and additives. Finally, an air pollution control system purifies the gases released by the rotary furnace, blast furnace and refinery kettle so that the plant can meet strict environmental requirements.

Recovering value from lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries power everything from phones to electric vehicles, and their rapid growth has made them one of the most important recycling streams to manage well. Rather than sending spent batteries to landfill, a lithium battery recycling plant breaks and separates them to recover black mass, which contains nickel, cobalt and graphite, along with plastic, copper and aluminium.

San Lan provides complete lithium battery recycling plants with a processing capacity of 500 to 2,500 kilograms per hour. The process covers discharging, pre-crushing, secondary granulation and black powder separation, followed by magnetic separation of iron and steel. Dedicated pollution control is built in too: an air pollution control system absorbs and neutralises harmful gases before they are released, while a plastic pneumatic conveying system collects the separator film and a hydraulic briquetter presses it into compact blocks. The result is a plant that pulls high-value materials back into the economy while keeping hazardous gases under control.

Recovering metals from circuit boards

Printed circuit boards are among the richest sources of valuable metal in e-waste, holding copper and precious metals that are costly and energy-intensive to mine from primary ores. Responsible processing of PCBs therefore supports both environmental goals and resource conservation.

San Lan's circuit board recycling equipment uses a mechanical, automated process that recovers copper powder with a purity of 96 to 98 percent, depending on the model, and can be designed for capacities from 300 up to 5,000 kilograms per hour. Air and wet separation variants are available, with multi-stage systems including vibrating screens, cyclone separators, electrostatic separators and pulse bag dust collectors. Recovery rates reach around 95 percent with no dust pollution, so recyclers can extract the value locked in boards without releasing fine dust into the surrounding environment.

Closing the loop on cables, refrigerators and more

A complete approach to sustainable e-waste management also reaches the everyday items that fill recycling centres: scrap cables, refrigerators, air conditioners and motors. Scrap cable stripping machines and cable granulators separate copper and aluminium from plastic insulation, turning tangled bundles of wire into clean, marketable metal. San Lan's cable recycling equipment ranges from compact desktop granulators to high-capacity plants, with models covering cable diameters from 1.5mm up to 150mm.

For white goods, a refrigerator and AC recycling line extracts refrigerant, cuts compressor bodies to release copper coil, then shreds and separates the housing so that iron, copper, aluminium and plastic can each be recovered, with iron recovery of 95 percent or more and polyurethane captured rather than dumped. Motor stator cutters dismantle electric motors to remove copper windings from the iron core, and multi-shaft shredders and pre-choppers prepare oversized waste for whatever comes next. Even fluorescent lamps are handled safely, as a dedicated bulb eater crushes tubes and captures mercury through HEPA and active carbon filters so a highly toxic pollutant never re-enters the environment.
