Ribbon cables are everywhere—inside old computers, printers, monitors, and a growing pile of e-waste. Their flat, multi-conductor design makes them compact and easy to route, but it also makes them one of the trickiest cable types to recycle. A round power cord can be fed into a standard stripper and stripped in seconds. A ribbon cable, with its thin parallel conductors packed side by side, needs a different approach.

What Are Ribbon Cables?
A ribbon cable, also called a flat cable, consists of multiple insulated conductors running parallel to each other inside a single flat sheath. You will find them in:

- Flat display cables in monitors, laptops and LCD panels
- Internal wiring in printers, copiers and office equipment
- Instrument and control wiring in industrial machines
Because the conductors are thin and closely spaced, ribbon cables often carry a surprisingly high amount of copper relative to their weight—which is exactly why they are worth recycling.
Why Ribbon Cables Are Difficult to Strip
Unlike round cables, ribbon cables create three specific problems for stripping equipment:
- Flat profile. A round blade designed for cylindrical cable cannot cut evenly across a flat cable. It tends to cut deeper at the edges and shallower in the middle, leaving insulation behind or nicking the outer conductors.
- Thin, fragile conductors. The individual wires inside a ribbon cable are often well under 1 mm thick. If the blade pressure is not controlled precisely, the machine can slice through the copper along with the insulation, turning valuable conductor into dust.
- Parallel conductors. Because the cores sit side by side in one sheath, a single cut must strip all of them at the same depth and the same length. Any misalignment causes missed strips, partial peeling, or single-wire damage.
How Scrap Cable Stripper Equipment Solves These Problems

1. Flat pressing and positioning components
The machine holds the ribbon cable flat and evenly between pressing rollers before the blade touches it. This stops the cable from twisting or deforming during cutting, so the blade meets every conductor at the same angle.

Fine blade-depth adjustment is essential for ribbon cables. Set the blade just deep enough to cut the insulation without touching the copper. On machines with a dial or digital adjustment, operators can switch quickly between ribbon cables and round cables in the same batch.

A flat blade strips all the internal conductors at once, at equal length, avoiding the missed-strip and partial-peel problems common with round-blade machines. For thicker flat cables, a V-shaped blade can center the cable and cut both edges cleanly.
4. Variable feed speed
Ribbon cables with many thin cores should be fed more slowly so the blade has time to cut cleanly. A variable-speed feed lets the operator slow down for delicate flat cables and speed up for heavier round cables, keeping throughput high without sacrificing quality.
Practical Tips for Recycling Ribbon Cables
- Sort before stripping. Keep ribbon cables separate from heavy round cables so you can set the machine once and run a full batch without constant re-adjustment.
- Strip in short lengths. Very long ribbon cables can snag or twist during feeding. Cutting them into manageable lengths first improves feed stability.
- Check blade wear regularly. A dull blade pushes insulation instead of cutting it, which damages the thin conductors. replace or re-sharpen blades as part of routine maintenance.
- Know when to switch to a granulator. If your ribbon cable has dozens of very thin cores, a cable granulator is often the better choice. It shreds the cable and separates copper from plastic in one pass, avoiding the per-wire stripping problem entirely.
