How much copper is in an air conditioner of different sizes and types

Air conditioners are among the most copper-rich appliances in the e-waste stream. Where copper is located inside an air conditioner

Copper is not spread evenly through an AC system. It is concentrated in a handful of components, each contributing a different share of the total:

  • Condenser coil (outdoor unit): coiled copper tubing threaded through aluminum fins. This is usually the single richest source of copper in a residential system.
  • Evaporator coil (indoor unit): a similar copper-tube, aluminum-fin construction inside the air handler or furnace.
  • Compressor windings: copper wire wound around the motor stator inside the sealed compressor. The compressor is the heaviest single copper-bearing part.
  • Refrigerant line set: the liquid line and insulated suction line connecting the indoor and outdoor units.
  • Fan motors and electrical parts: smaller amounts of copper in motor windings, wiring harnesses and capacitors.

What changes the copper content

  • Age: units built before roughly 2005 generally contain more copper, because aluminum was less commonly used as a substitute back then.
  • Efficiency rating: high-efficiency units often use multi-row coils with more copper tubing, so they can carry more copper than lower-efficiency models of the same size.
  • Coil construction: some budget brands have switched to all-aluminum evaporator and condenser coils, which sharply reduces the copper content of newer units.
  • Application: longer line sets in multi-story or commercial installations add copper beyond what is inside the two main units.

Why copper recovery drives AC recycling economics

Copper is the most valuable material in an end-of-life air conditioner. Recovered copper tubing, stripped compressor wire and clean motor windings sell at far higher rates than mixed appliance scrap. For a plant processing dozens or hundreds of units per day, the copper yield is what turns AC recycling from a disposal cost into a profitable business. Recycling air conditioners at scale

Manual stripping works for a single unit, but it does not scale. A commercial AC recycling line follows three essential steps, each with its own equipment:
