How to Build a Profitable E-Waste Recycling Plant: A Complete Equipment Guide

Electronic waste is the fastest-growing waste stream on the planet, yet it contains more recoverable valuable metals than many natural ore deposits. One tonne of mobile phone circuit boards holds more gold than a tonne of high-grade mined ore. The business opportunity is real, but success depends entirely on choosing the right equipment and engineering partner. This guide walks through the core recycling streams, the machinery you need for each, and what to look for in a supplier.

1. The Four Core E-Waste Recycling Streams

Most profitable recycling plants focus on one or more of these four feedstock categories. Each requires a different process flow and equipment set.

  • Used Lead Acid Batteries (ULAB): High volume, predictable feedstock. Recovers lead paste, lead grids, plastic shells, and sulfuric acid.
  • Lithium-Ion Batteries: Fastest-growing stream driven by EVs and consumer electronics. Recovers black mass (nickel, cobalt, graphite), copper, aluminum, and plastic.
  • Printed Circuit Boards (PCB): The highest value-per-tonne stream. Recovers copper powder, precious metals, and resin powder.
  • Scrap Cables and Wires: Consistent industrial and construction feedstock. Separates copper or aluminum from plastic insulation.

2. Lead Acid Battery Recycling: From Breaking to Refined Lead

A complete lead acid battery recycling equipment line typically includes a breaking and separation system, a filtration unit, a smelting furnace, and a refinery kettle. The breaking system crushes whole batteries and classifies the output into four fractions: acid, lead paste, lead grids, and plastic. Capacities range from 1 to 10 metric tonnes per hour depending on your scale.

For lead recovery from paste, rotary furnaces and blast furnaces are the standard options. Rotary furnaces offer higher recovery rates than blast furnaces and handle batch sizes of 2 to 20 metric tonnes. To reach 99.999% pure lead, a refinery kettle is essential. Electric-heated refinery kettles using near-infrared technology can cut energy consumption by 30 to 50 percent compared with traditional fuel heating.

Environmental note: Modern plants must include air pollution control systems and wastewater treatment units. De-sulfurization units reduce SO2 emissions and lower melting temperatures, which saves both energy and chemical additives.

3. Lithium Battery Recycling: Recovering Critical Materials

Lithium-ion battery recycling starts with safe discharging and mechanical size reduction. A complete lithium battery recycling plant breaks cells into black mass, plastic film, copper, and aluminum through a sequence of pre-crushing, secondary granulation, magnetic separation, and fine separation. Standard capacities run from 500 to 2,500 kilograms per hour.

Because lithium batteries release harmful gases during crushing, dedicated air pollution control systems are mandatory. These systems absorb and neutralize emissions before release. Downstream, plastic film can be pneumatically conveyed and hydraulically briquetted into dense blocks with a volume compression ratio of 10 to 1, reducing storage and transport costs.

4. Circuit Board and Cable Recycling: High-Purity Metal Output

Circuit board recycling equipment uses either dry air separation or wet water separation. Dry separation plants with air classifiers and electrostatic separators achieve copper powder purity of 96 to 98 percent with no dust pollution. Wet separation systems handle boards still carrying electronic components and can process 300 to 5,000 kilograms per hour depending on the model.

For cable recycling, the workflow usually starts with scrap cable strippers for large-diameter wire, followed by cable granulators for fine wire. Granulators with dry separators recover copper and aluminum granules from plastic insulation in a single pass. Output quality depends on blade sharpness, screen size, and airflow tuning.

Key metric: A well-tuned cable recycling line can process from 200 kilograms to 15 metric tonnes of scrap cable per ten-hour shift, depending on machine specifications and operator skill.

5. Supporting Equipment: Shredders, Furnaces, and Environmental Systems

Before any specialized processing, most e-waste needs size reduction. Multi-purpose shredders handle everything from refrigerators and washing machines to circuit boards and batteries. Four-shaft shredders with capacities of 4 to 6 metric tonnes per hour are common in large plants, while single-shaft and twin-shaft models suit smaller or specialized operations.

Downstream metal melting is often handled by medium-frequency induction furnaces, which can melt iron, copper, aluminum, tin, gold, and silver into ingots. For plants handling CRT monitors, dedicated CRT cutters separate panel glass from funnel glass and safely collect phosphor powder in 90 seconds per unit.
