The same copper that drives the heat-exchange coils, the compressor windings, and the wiring is also what gives an old unit its scrap value. Before you haul one to a scrap yard or start pulling it apart yourself, it pays to know roughly how much copper is inside. That number tells you what the unit is likely worth and whether the work of taking it down is actually worth your time.

Where the Copper Lives in a Window Unit

Copper is not sitting in one obvious block; it is spread across several parts of the machine. Most of it sits in a handful of locations:

  • Evaporator coil - the cold indoor coil that pulls heat out of the room air.
  • Condenser coil - the warm outdoor coil that releases that heat.
  • Compressor windings - the copper motor winding sealed inside the compressor can.
  • Fan motor windings - the small motors that spin the indoor and outdoor blowers.
  • Connecting tubing and fittings - the lines that link the coils to the compressor.
  • Wiring harness - the control wiring running through the unit.

The coils and the connecting tubes carry most of the weight. Once you strip away the steel cabinet, the plastic housing, and the foam, the copper-bearing parts are usually the most recognizable and the most valuable things left.

Factors That Affect How Much Copper a Window Unit Holds

There is no single answer for every unit, because three things move the number up or down. The cooling capacity (BTU rating) is the biggest one; bigger units need larger coils and move more refrigerant, so they carry more copper. The age of the unit matters too, since older machines often use heavier tubing than today's thin-wall designs. Finally, manufacturer choices in coil design change the total, though by less than the size of the unit. The table below gives a typical range you can use as a starting point.

Steel dominates most window units at 45% to 60%, with aluminum coils and housing in the single digits. So if you weigh the whole unit and it comes in around 60 pounds, a sensible copper estimate would land in the 2 to 5 pound range, which lines up with the table.

Step-by-Step: Estimate Copper Before You Break Anything

The fastest way to size up a unit before you touch a screwdriver works in three moves:

  • Read the nameplate. The BTU rating is printed on the metal plate on the side or back of the unit.
  • Match it to the table. A 10,000 BTU window unit will sit somewhere between the 8,000 and 12,000 BTU rows, so roughly 2.5 to 4 lbs of copper is a reasonable assumption.
  • Weigh the whole unit and apply the 3-8% share. If the full weight points to a much higher or lower number than the table, trust the heavier estimate and dig a little deeper before valuing it.

Keep in mind these are estimates, not guarantees. Design differences between brands can shift the total by a pound or so, which is why the real number only comes from actually separating and weighing the copper.

The Field Method: Weigh What You Actually Recover

When you own the unit and can work on it safely (meaning the refrigerant has already been recovered), the accurate method is to handle the parts and weigh them. The process is straightforward:

  • Strip and sort. Pull the steel cabinet, plastic shell, foam, and fans off and set them aside. Keep the coils, tubing, and wiring as your copper group.
  • Separate clean copper from brass. Fittings and some end caps are brass rather than pure copper. Yards price them differently, so sort them out.
  • Weigh each pile separately. A bathroom or luggage scale is accurate enough for a few pounds.
  • Keep the grades apart. Clean copper tube sold to a yard brings a better price than a mixed pile of copper, brass, and steel.

One quick trick keeps sorting honest: copper is dull reddish-pink and noticeably heavier than aluminum, which is silver-gray and light. If two pieces of tubing look the same size but one feels much heavier, it is almost certainly copper.

From Pounds to Dollars: Estimating the Value

Once you have a copper weight, the money side is a simple multiplication: value = pounds of copper x the price per pound your local yard is paying. Scrap copper prices move with the market, but clean #1 copper has traded in the rough $4.80 to $5.30 per pound range through mid-2026 in the U.S. As an example, 3 pounds of clean copper at $5 per pound is about $15 of value from a single small unit. Your own yard sets the real number, so check the day you sell, and remember that clean, sorted copper consistently beats a mixed load.

Why Recovery Equipment Changes the Math

Hand labour only recovers part of what is actually in the unit. Copper locked inside a sealed compressor or deep inside foam and laminated motor cores is often left behind by manual stripping. That is where AC recycling machines change the outcome: a shredding and separating plant crushes and classifies the materials mechanically, pulling out copper and aluminum that would otherwise be written off, while a compressor cutting machine opens the sealed compressor so the winding copper comes out clean. For a recycler handling dozens or hundreds of units, mechanical recovery is where the real difference between estimated and actual yield shows up.

Safety First: Refrigerant and Responsible Handling

A window AC contains pressurized refrigerant, and that is the one part you should never handle casually. Cutting into the sealed refrigeration circuit to release the gas is hazardous and, in many areas, against the law. Responsible recyclers recover the refrigerant first using a refrigerant recycling machine, and follow local rules for disposal and recovery. Only after the refrigerant is gone does the copper work become safe.

Turning the Estimate Into a Decision

Knowing the copper content is the first step, and the calculation is simple once you have a range: read the BTU rating, match it to the table, and weigh what you actually pull out. Whether you are a homeowner selling a single old window unit or a recycler scaling up by the truckload, that estimate turns an idle machine from junk into a predictable line item. Copper is the metal that carries the value, and a little arithmetic before you start is all it takes to make sure you recover it all.
