Buying a recycling plant is one of the biggest capital decisions a scrap processor will make, and the supplier you pick decides whether that investment pays off. China is home to hundreds of recycling machine manufacturers, and at first glance their offers look similar: the same shredder photos, the same capacity numbers, the same "factory price" claims. The difference between a machine that runs for fifteen years and one that breaks down every month rarely shows up on a quotation. That is why comparing suppliers on quality and price properly matters more than simply finding the cheapest quote.
Step 1 — Set your baseline before you compare
Before you open any quotation, write down what your plant actually needs. Feedstock: what material will you process — used lead acid batteries, lithium-ion cells, scrap cables, printed circuit boards, or a mix? Capacity: how many tons per hour do you need today, and how much headroom do you want for growth? End products: what do you plan to sell — copper rice, lead ingot, black mass, plastic granules? Local rules: what emission and effluent standards must your plant meet? A supplier that asks these questions before quoting is already telling you something. One that quotes from a price list without asking is telling you something too.
Step 2 — Compare quality on evidence, not brochures
Quality is hard to judge from a spec sheet, but it is not impossible to verify. Ask every supplier for the same set of evidence and compare their answers side by side.
- Technical depth. Can they explain how their separation technology works for your material? For example, lead acid battery recycling equipment must break and separate batteries into lead paste, lead grids, plastic shells and acid without cross-contamination. If they cannot walk you through the breaking mechanism and separation efficiency, that is a warning sign.
- Manufacturing control. Do they make core components in-house, or do they assemble bought-in parts? In-house fabrication of shredders, granulators and separation tables usually means tighter quality control.
- Material specs. Ask for the steel grade of shredder blades, the alloy used in wet-separation parts, and whether they can provide material certificates.
- Reference projects. Ask for three clients running the same type of line, ideally in your region. Call them. Ask about uptime and spare-part lead times, not just throughput.
- Factory audit. A real manufacturer welcomes a visit or a video tour. If a supplier hesitates to show you the workshop, treat that as a red flag.
Step 3 — Compare price on equal scope
The biggest mistake in comparing prices is comparing different things. One quote may include a pulse bag dust collector and a cyclone separator; another may list them as "optional extras" that double the final invoice. Before comparing numbers, make sure every quote covers the same scope: pre-treatment, the main processing line, separation stages, pollution control, water treatment, installation supervision, commissioning, operator training, and the first set of wear parts. Then look at total cost of ownership, not the sticker price. A machine that uses more energy per ton, needs blades replaced twice as often, or sits idle for weeks waiting for a spare part is expensive no matter how low the initial quote. Ask about energy consumption per ton of material, expected wear-part life, and where spare parts are stocked.
Step 4 — Build a weighted scorecard
Once you have three or four comparable quotes, put them into a simple scorecard. Weight each factor according to what matters for your project, score every supplier from 1 to 5, and multiply. A typical weighting looks like this:

The lowest price rarely wins once you score on this basis — and when it does, you know exactly why.
Step 5 — Watch for red flags
Some warning signs should end the conversation regardless of price: a supplier who cannot name the steel grade of their blades; one who treats environmental protection as an optional extra; one who refuses to share client contacts; one who quotes a price that looks too good next to everyone else's; one who asks for full payment before delivery with no milestone schedule. None of these prove fraud, but all of them raise the risk that the "saving" on the invoice becomes a loss in the first year of operation.
What a fair comparison looks like
Comparing recycling machine suppliers in China is not about finding the lowest number on a quotation. It is about comparing quality on verifiable evidence and price on equal scope, then weighing both against the long-term cost of running the plant. A supplier with real manufacturing, real reference projects and real after-sales support will usually cost a little more up front — and save far more over the life of the equipment.
