How to identify burn copper versus clean copper scrap

Not all copper scrap is worth the same price, and the single quickest way to sort it is to tell clean copper apart from burn copper. Burn copper is wire or cable that has been heated, stripped by fire, or processed with the insulation charred off, while clean copper scrap is bright, loose and free of blackened residue. Because the two types carry very different value and need different handling, learning to tell them apart at a glance protects your payout on every load. This guide explains how to identify burn copper versus clean copper scrap, and how the right recovery equipment can help you make the most of both.

Why the distinction matters

Copper's price depends almost entirely on its grade. A copper lump that is bright, shiny and free of contamination sells for much more per kilogram than the same weight of wire that has been burnt, because burnt insulation, soot, oxidation and melted debris all have to be removed before the copper can be reused. When waste comes out of a demolition or an electrical upgrade, it is usually a mixed pile. Sorting clean copper from burn copper first means every batch is graded correctly, nothing valuable is lost to a "dirty" price, and the less valuable stream can still be processed properly.

It is also a practical matter for a recycling yard. A granulator line runs cleanly when the feed is consistent. If burn copper with hard, brittle insulation is dumped in with bright wire, the machine has to work harder, dust and residue build up, and every tonne of output is worth a little less. Identifying the two up front keeps the whole operation cleaner and more profitable.

What clean copper scrap looks like

Clean copper scrap is easier to recognize than most people expect. Start from the surface. Freshly stripped copper wire has a bright, pinkish-orange or salmon colour, and a good piece of bare bright copper is so clean and shiny that it almost seems to glow. If the copper is a little older, it shows a reddish-brown tone, which is still a strong sign it belongs in the higher grades.

There is a handy rule when you are grading by eye: the greener a copper piece looks, the lower its grade. A powdery green patina or heavy dark tarnishing means the surface has oxidised over a long time, and oxidation is one of the first things a grader will discount. A quick scratch with a key or the edge of a file can reveal the true metal underneath — bright copper hiding under a dull skin can often be reclassified upward.

What burn copper looks like and why it acts differently

Burn copper is wire whose insulation has been damaged by heat, either because a building or vehicle fire caught a cable run, or because someone tried to strip insulation off by burning it. The tell-tale signs are plain: black or charred patches on the copper core, brittle melted insulation stuck to the surface, a dull grey or bluish tint where the copper has been oxidised by flame, and sometimes soot that smudges on your fingers.

The reason burn copper grades lower is not that the copper is ruined — the metal itself is still perfectly recyclable — but that recovering it takes more work. Melted plastic has to be knocked off or cut away, oxidised skin has to be shed, and the residue that attaches to the surface lowers the purity if it is not removed. Because the recycler has to absorb that extra processing effort, burn copper nearly always receives a lower price than clean copper of the same weight.

The magnet and weight checks

Before you decide clean from burn, confirm you are actually holding copper. Copper is not magnetic, so a magnet is the fastest check. Hold a fridge magnet, or a stronger rare-earth magnet, against the piece. If it pulls or sticks at all, the item contains iron or steel and belongs in a different pile. If the magnet has no effect at all, you are almost certainly holding a non-ferrous metal such as copper or brass.

Weight is the next clue. Copper is noticeably dense — a piece that is the same size as aluminium feels clearly heavier, and much heavier than people expect on first lift. If a reddish piece feels suspiciously light, it may be a painted or copper-coloured alloy over a lighter base, and it is worth a closer look before it goes into the clean-copper bin.

Stripping clean wire to push the grade up

For clean insulated wire, the single most valuable step is removing the insulation. Insulated wire is priced on its estimated copper recovery, that is, the share of pure metal inside the plastic or rubber wrapping. Once that wrapping is off and you are selling bare copper, the value of the metal on its own can move the material from a mixed or insulated price all the way up to one of the top clean grades.

Burn copper cannot be rescued the same way. Its insulation has already fused to the surface, so there is no clean skin to peel away. Trying to burn clean wire to loosen it only creates more burn copper, releases toxic fumes from the plastic, and wastes the value you were trying to save. The safe answer for clean wire is mechanical stripping and granulation, and for burn copper it is accepting the lower grade or feeding it through proper recovery equipment that can separate the charred residues.

How the right equipment turns both streams into value

Whether you are handling bright wire or burn copper, the underlying goal is the same: separate the metal from everything else as completely and cleanly as possible. A well-chosen cable recycling machine strips, shreds and granulates wire, then uses air or water separation to pull clean copper granule away from plastic, so even a feed that arrives as mixed scrap leaves with a recoverable copper fraction.

Safety and keeping burn copper out of the open-air fire

A short safety note worth keeping. Burning insulation off wire by hand is never the answer. The plastic gives off harmful fumes, the fire can spread, and the burnt residue it leaves only lowers the value of the copper. Wear gloves when handling burnt wire, because charred insulation can carry sharp edges and chemical residues, and let a machine do the separation instead of a flame.

This also matters for the environment. Mechanically stripping and granulating cable keeps insulation out of the air and captures the plastic for recycling, which is why processors prefer equipment that separates cleanly rather than relying on heat.
