Step 1: Define Your Cable Recycling Requirements First

Before you contact any supplier, write a precise specification. Vague descriptions produce vague quotations, and worse, equipment that cannot actually process the material you collect. A clear specification should cover:

  • Input material — is your scrap mainly thick power cable, fine automotive wire, jelly-filled telecom cable, or a mix? Different cable types call for different equipment paths.
  • Daily capacity — how many tonnes per day do you expect? Compact granulators start around 100 kg per hour, while full plants handle several tonnes per shift.
  • Recovery target — separated and clean copper and aluminium, or briquetted powder suitable for direct smelting or sale.
  • Site conditions — available power (many African sites run 380V/50Hz), floor space, water availability for wet separation, and unloading capacity.
  • Environmental rules — dust control requirements and local emission standards, which can differ by country.

For example, a recycler whose feedstock is mainly thin and medium cable should plan around a cable recycling machine that combines a granulator with a dry separation stage, so the copper and plastic are separated without water. If your waste includes a lot of oversized or armoured cable, you may need a stripping step or a pre-shredder on the front of the line. Standard practice for machinery from China is a deposit with the balance before shipment, but larger buyers can often negotiate milestone payments tied to production progress and pre-shipment inspection. Agree on the Incoterm clearly, because it decides who carries the risk of freight and customs:

  • EXW — you arrange all shipping and export formalities from the factory gate. Lowest price, but maximum responsibility.
  • FOB — the supplier delivers to the Chinese port of export, and you handle freight, insurance and destination clearance.
  • CIF — the supplier covers freight and insurance to the destination port, where you take over.
  • DDP — the supplier delivers to your door including duties. Best if you lack import experience, at a higher price.

Many first-time importers to Africa prefer DDP because it gives them a single point of responsibility. Whatever you choose, put the warranty in writing — a 12 to 24 month warranty is standard — and include a spare-parts commitment so a single worn blade does not stop your whole line.

Step 5: Plan Your Shipping Route

Sea freight is the most economical way to move recycling machinery from China to Africa. The main Chinese export ports connect directly to key African gateways, with transit times that vary by route:

  • China to Mombasa (Kenya) — roughly 20 to 30 days by sea.
  • China to Lagos / Apapa (Nigeria) — roughly 30 to 40 days.
  • China to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) — roughly 25 to 35 days.
  • China to Durban (South Africa) — a regular and well-established deep-sea route.

Machinery is heavy, and freight rates move with the season — booking around the pre-Chinese-New-Year peak can save on freight and get factory space more easily. For dense, heavy granulators a full container works well; if you are buying a complete plant, plan the pieces across several containers or a flat rack. Confirm the export packaging specification: wooden crating or steel frame with moisture protection is essential, because container humidity on long tropical voyages can be high and rusted equipment is hard to commission.

Step 6: Handle Customs and Documentation

Customs clearance is where unprepared importers pay the highest price. The two leading causes of delay are incorrect HS code classification and incomplete paperwork. Engage a licensed customs broker who specialises in machinery imports, and prepare your documentation in advance:

  • Commercial invoice — itemised with HS codes and values for each line.
  • Packing list — dimensions, weights and packing details for each package.
  • Bill of Lading — the carrier's shipping document.
  • Certificate of Origin — sometimes needed to claim preferential duty rates.
  • Technical documentation — equipment specifications and test reports required for industrial machinery in most markets.
  • Conformity certification — the relevant scheme where it applies, for example KEBS in Kenya or SONCAP in Nigeria.

Duty rates on machinery vary across Africa, so always verify with your broker before the shipment arrives. Nigerian import duties on machinery typically range from about 5% to 35% by category, Kenya from about 0% to 25%, and South Africa from about 5% to 15%. Budgeting for duties and VAT/GST at the start of the project prevents an unpleasant surprise at the port.

Step 7: Prepare for Installation and Commissioning

Your job is not finished when the container leaves customs. Prepare the installation site before the machinery arrives — lay the concrete foundation, arrange the electrical supply, and confirm you have a crane or forklift rated for the heavy machine weights involved. A recycling granulator can weigh several tonnes, and an inadequate crane at the site turns an easy offload into an expensive emergency hire.

Choose a supplier that commits to commissioning and operator training. Ask whether an engineer can travel to your site for installation, and insist on a full day of test running so you confirm the machine actually performs to its rated capacity and produces clean copper output.
