Why Use Vinegar and Salt?

The classic way to strip gold from circuit boards involves nitric acid, which is highly corrosive and produces toxic fumes. That is not something to try in a kitchen. Vinegar is a mild solution of acetic acid, and when you combine it with ordinary salt it forms a gentle stripping solution that slowly loosens the thin gold plating from the board surfaces. The reaction is much weaker than acid-based methods, so it works slowly, but it is far safer for a home experimenter. Adding a little hydrogen peroxide helps the solution work a bit faster by supplying extra oxygen to the reaction.

  • Tin snips or heavy scissors for cutting boards

  • Tweezers and a small glass vial for collecting the gold

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Collect and prepare the circuit boards. Old motherboards, RAM sticks, CPU chips and phone boards are good sources because they carry gold-plated contacts. Use the tin snips to cut out the sections that show a gold colour, such as the edge connectors and pin areas. You do not need to soak the whole board; the gold-bearing parts are enough.

Step 2: Clean the parts. Rinse the cut pieces under running water to remove dust and loose debris, then let them dry completely before starting.

Step 3: Prepare the stripping solution. Fill a glass beaker about half full with white vinegar and stir in two or three tablespoons of salt until it dissolves. The salt is the key ingredient, because the chloride ions it provides are what help pull the gold off the board surface.

Step 4: Add the circuit board pieces. drop the prepared pieces into the beaker and make sure they are fully submerged in the vinegar and salt solution.

Step 5: Add the hydrogen peroxide. Pour in a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide, roughly a cup for a large beaker. The mixture will start to bubble gently. Cover the beaker loosely and leave it to work.

Step 6: Let it soak. Leave the boards in the solution for 24 to 48 hours, stirring once or twice a day. Over time you will see thin gold foils lifting away from the board surfaces and floating in the liquid. The longer you soak, the more gold you recover, so patience pays off here.

Step 7: Strain out the gold foils. Place a fine mesh strainer lined with a coffee filter over a clean container and pour the solution through it. The gold foils will collect on the filter while the plastic and board fragments stay behind.

Step 8: Rinse and dry the gold. Gently rinse the collected foils with distilled water, then let them dry completely. Once dry, scrape the gold into a small glass vial. If you want to go further, the dried foils can be melted into a small bead with a propane torch, though this step is optional and should only be done outdoors with proper safety gear.

Safety First

Even though the vinegar and salt method is far gentler than acid refining, you should still take basic precautions. Work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors, wear rubber gloves and safety goggles, and keep the solution away from children and pets. Never mix the stripping solution with bleach or other household cleaners, because the combination can release harmful gases. And remember that circuit boards contain other metals and materials, so treat the leftover liquid and board scraps as waste rather than pouring them down the drain.
