Printed circuit boards pulled from old computers, mobile phones, routers and network switches carry a thin layer of gold, most of it plated onto connector fingers, CPU pins and contact pads. It is not much per board, but across a steady stream of scrap it adds up quickly, which is why gold recovery is often the most profitable part of e-waste processing. The classic way to dissolve that gold is cyanide leaching, a method that has been used in mining for well over a century. It works, but it is also highly toxic, tightly regulated, and increasingly difficult to justify for a recycling business. Why cyanide is the wrong tool for PCB recycling
Cyanide is extremely good at dissolving gold, which is exactly why it became the industry standard. But that effectiveness comes with serious costs. Cyanide is lethal to humans and wildlife even in small amounts, and the spent solution has to be treated before it can be discharged. In many countries, using cyanide requires permits, licensed staff and dedicated handling equipment, and a growing number of jurisdictions restrict or ban it outright. For small and medium recyclers, the compliance burden alone can wipe out the profit margin on a batch of boards. Cyanide-free stripping avoids all of this while still recovering the gold efficiently, which is why more and more operators are switching.
How cyanide-free gold stripping works
Non-cyanide stripping reagents do the same job with a different chemistry. Instead of a single toxic compound, they combine a mild complexing agent with an oxidizer. The oxidizer takes electrons from the gold surface and the complexing agent holds the dissolved gold in solution, so the thin gold layer lifts off the board while the copper and nickel underneath stay untouched. That selectivity matters: the stripped boards can still be sold as copper scrap, which changes the economics of the whole job. Depending on the reagent, the working solution is heated to roughly 45–70°C, and thin gold plating can be stripped in as little as a few minutes.
There are also acid-based systems, for example a mixture of sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide and an organic acid such as glutamic acid, which selectively strips gold from intact boards. And on the physical side, focused ultrasound in water can knock gold off PCB surfaces without any chemical at all. For most recyclers, though, a chemical stripping bath remains the most practical balance of speed, cost and simplicity.
Step by step: removing gold without cyanide
The process below is the one used in small workshops and can be scaled up as volumes grow.
Step 1 — Prepare the material. Dismantle any chips and components, cut off the gold-plated connector fingers, and wash off surface oils and dirt. Clean, dry material strips faster and keeps the solution working longer.
Step 2 — Prepare the stripping solution. Dissolve the reagent in hot water at the concentration recommended for your plating thickness. A common starting point is around 5% by weight, or roughly 40–100 g per litre for thin plating. Stir until fully dissolved and let the solution settle so fine particles drop out.
Step 3 — Strip the gold. Submerge the prepared boards in the solution and keep the temperature in the recommended range with gentle stirring. You can watch the progress visually: the gold layer discolours and peels within seconds to minutes, revealing the base metal underneath. Stop when the gold is gone and the solution stops reacting.
Step 4 — Filter the pregnant solution. Separate the stripped boards and filter the gold-rich liquid to remove solids. A clear solution is important because it makes the next step far more reliable.
Step 5 — Recover the gold. The dissolved gold can be precipitated out with zinc powder or zinc wire, recovered by electrowinning, or adsorbed onto activated carbon. The resulting black gold powder is then smelted into crude gold, which can be refined further if needed.
Safety and environmental care
Cyanide-free does not mean harmless. These reagents still need proper handling: gloves, goggles, good ventilation and secure storage away from children and food. Spent solution should be treated before discharge rather than poured down the drain, and rinse water should be collected and returned to the process so no gold is lost.
