What is the difference between computer motherboard gold and gold finger gold

Open up an old desktop computer and the first thing many people look for is gold. Two areas usually stand out: the rows of gold-colored contacts scattered across the motherboard, and the bright gold strips along the edge of the memory modules and graphics cards. Both look like gold, and both actually are gold. But they are not the same kind of gold plating, and the difference matters a lot if you are sorting scrap boards for recycling.

The gold you see on the surface of a motherboard is mostly immersion gold, applied through a finish known as ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold). A thin layer of nickel is deposited first, and then a layer of gold is deposited on top by a chemical immersion process. This gold is very thin, typically only 1 to 3 micro-inches (0.025 to 0.075 micrometers). It is soft gold, and it is not designed to survive heavy mechanical wear. Its job is to give the board a flat, oxidation-resistant, solderable surface so that components can be soldered reliably and high-speed signals can pass through stable contacts. You will find this kind of gold on CPU socket contacts, RAM slot contacts, PCIe slot contacts and small component pads across the board.

Gold fingers are a different story. These are the gold-plated edge connectors found on RAM modules, graphics cards and other expansion cards, the strips that slide into the slots on the motherboard. Because these contacts are inserted and removed over and over again, they need a much tougher finish. That is why gold fingers use hard gold, also called electrolytic gold. Hard gold is deposited by electroplating, which allows a thicker, harder layer to be built up. A typical gold finger carries 15 to 30 micro-inches of gold, and demanding designs can go up to 30 to 50 micro-inches, plated over a nickel underlayer of 100 to 200 micro-inches. Hard gold is often alloyed with a small amount of cobalt or nickel to make it harder, so it can withstand thousands of insertion and removal cycles without wearing through.

Both are real gold, and both can be recovered, but they behave very differently when it comes to sorting and processing.
