It transfers force from the hydraulic pump to the ram or piston that compresses plastic materials. The right oil ensures smooth operation, prevents overheating, protects pump components from wear, and maintains consistent compression force. Using the wrong oil can lead to sluggish operation, internal leaks, pump cavitation, and premature equipment failure.

For hydraulic briquetter equipment, manufacturers typically recommend anti-wear (AW) hydraulic oils. These oils contain zinc-based additives that form a protective layer on metal surfaces under high pressure. Similarly, never substitute motor oil or automatic transmission fluid (ATF), as these contain detergents and friction modifiers that can cause foaming and seal damage in hydraulic systems.

- ISO VG 68: Ideal for heavy-duty operations, hot environments, or continuous-duty briquetters that generate significant heat during compression cycles. The thicker oil maintains proper viscosity at elevated temperatures.
Special Considerations for Plastic Briquetting
Plastic hydraulic briquetters handling separator films from lithium battery recycling have unique operational characteristics. The hydraulic system must deliver steady, high force to achieve the 10:1 volume compression ratio. During extended operation, the oil temperature can rise significantly. If your facility operates in a warm climate or runs the briquetter continuously, ISO VG 46 or even VG 68 may be necessary to prevent the oil from thinning excessively.
For facilities in cold regions, consider low-pour-point hydraulic oils such as L-HV or L-HS grades. These multi-viscosity formulations maintain fluidity at temperatures as low as -30°C to -40°C, ensuring reliable startup and preventing pump damage from oil starvation.
Oil Change and Maintenance Best Practices
Regular oil maintenance extends the life of your briquetter. Check the oil level daily and inspect for contamination. Plastic dust and debris from the recycling process can enter the hydraulic reservoir if seals are compromised. Change the oil and filters according to the manufacturer's schedule, typically every 2,000 to 4,000 operating hours for mineral-based oils. Synthetic hydraulic oils can extend this interval to 5,000 hours or more, though they require a higher initial investment.
