What Is the Operating Temperature of a CRT Cutter with Ni-Chrome Heater?
If you run an e-waste recycling line, you have probably asked this question at least once: what temperature should a CRT cutter with ni-chrome heater run at? It is a fair question, because getting the temperature right is the difference between clean, profitable separation and cracked glass, burnt wire, and wasted hours. This article gives you a straight answer, explains why that temperature works, and shows you how to adjust it for different CRT sizes.
The Short Answer
A ni-chrome (nickel-chromium) heating wire can operate at temperatures up to about 1200°C, which is why it is the material of choice for CRT cutting. However, for separating the panel glass from the funnel glass of a CRT, the practical operating temperature is typically 450-500°C. At this range, the lead-based frit seal between the two glass sections softens enough to part cleanly, without melting the glass itself or damaging the heating wire.
Why 450-500°C?
A CRT is made of two main glass parts: the panel (the front screen, made of non-lead glass) and the funnel (the rear section, made of lead glass). These two parts are joined by a frit seal, a solder-like glass bond. The ni-chrome heater works by heating a narrow band along this seal until it softens, allowing the two parts to be pulled apart cleanly.
  • Below about 450°C: the seal stays too stiff, the glass tends to chip or splinter, and the cut comes out rough.
  • Around 450-500°C: the seal softens evenly, the panel and funnel separate cleanly, and the phosphor coating inside is preserved.
  • Above about 500°C: the glass starts to melt into a sticky mess, the wire can overheat and shorten its life, and the phosphor powder may be damaged.
Adjusting the Temperature for Different CRTs
Not all CRTs are the same. Thicker, larger tubes hold more heat and need a slightly higher setting, while smaller tubes need less. A practical starting point is around 450°C for small tubes (14-17 inches), then raise the setting toward 500°C for large monitors and projection tubes. Keep a simple log of CRT size, temperature, and cut quality for each batch, and you will quickly find the sweet spot for your line.
Warm-Up Time and Knowing When It Is Ready
Do not rush the heat-up. A quality heater takes about 5-8 minutes to reach operating temperature. If you start cutting before the wire is fully hot, you will get jagged cuts and splintered glass. Most machines have a heating indicator light, so wait until it shows the heater is ready before feeding in a CRT. If your machine does not have one, use an infrared thermometer pointed at the middle of the ni-chrome coil for an accurate reading.
Signs You Are at the Wrong Temperature
  • Glass chips or the wire sticks: the heater is too cold. Raise the temperature by about 20°C.
  • Glass melts into a gooey mess: the heater is too hot. Lower the setting and let the wire cool slightly before the next cut.
  • Cuts are uneven on one side: the wire may be loose or dirty rather than at the wrong temperature, so check the tension and clean the wire after it cools.
Safety at Operating Temperature
At 450-500°C, the heating wire is hot enough to cause serious burns, and CRT glass contains lead. Always wear heat-resistant gloves, safety glasses with side shields, and long sleeves. Keep the work area clear, and make sure the machine has an emergency stop button and a thermal cutoff that shuts the heater down if it overheats.
