  • Glass fibres - the core signal-carrying strands, made of high-purity silica glass.
  • Coatings and buffer tubes - polymer layers, often acrylate and PBT, that protect the fragile glass.
  • Jackets - outer sheaths usually made of polyethylene (PE), PVC or low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) compounds.
  • Strength members - aramid yarn (Kevlar-type), fibre-reinforced plastic or steel wire that give the cable its pulling strength.
  • Armour and conductors - in outdoor and hybrid cables, there may be steel tape armour, aluminium moisture barriers and even copper conductors.

Because these materials are tightly bonded together, fibre optic cable cannot be recycled the same way copper wire is. The value lies in separating the stream into clean fractions.

Why the waste is a growing problem

Fibre optic cable is engineered to survive decades of harsh conditions. That durability is a feature while the cable is in service, but it becomes a problem in landfill. The glass fibres do not decompose, and the plastic jackets can persist for a very long time. When cables are simply dumped, the plastic content adds to the growing burden of plastic waste, while the embedded glass and metals are lost forever.   • Plastics. The jackets, buffer tubes and filler compounds make up a large share of the cable by weight.   • Glass fibre. The silica glass itself has low residual market value and is difficult to extract intact. In most cases it is recovered as a fine residue and can be used as filler in construction materials or handled by specialized glass recyclers. It should not be treated as the main revenue driver, but it still keeps material out of landfill.

How the potential is unlocked

The key to unlocking this potential is separation. A typical processing line starts with shredding the cable into short pieces, then granulating it into a fine mixture, and finally using air or water separation to split the lighter plastic fraction from the heavier metal fraction. The same principle that works for copper cable recycling applies here, with the process tuned for the lighter, glass-heavy fibre construction.

For recyclers, this means the machinery they already understand - shredders, granulators and separation systems - can be adapted to fibre optic cable. A scrap cable stripper can also handle the thicker outdoor and armoured cables before granulation, improving throughput and reducing wear on the granulator.

What this means for recyclers

For scrap processors and e-waste recyclers, fibre optic cable is an opportunity rather than a nuisance. It is a growing, consistent waste stream that arrives in bulk from telecom upgrades, data center refreshes and construction projects. With the right separation equipment, the plastics and metals inside can be turned into saleable products, and the glass residue can be disposed of responsibly. The economics are not as dramatic as pure copper cable, but the volume and the growing regulatory pressure to keep e-waste out of landfill make it a worthwhile stream to add.
