Printed circuit boards are some of the most metal-rich items in the e-waste stream. A single board can carry copper, gold, silver and a handful of other recoverable metals, which is why so many recycling plants now treat PCB scrap as a valuable resource rather than plain waste. But to pull those metals out cleanly, a plant needs more than a shredder and a separator. It also needs a set of machines that handle the water used throughout the process. That is exactly what water process equipment does, and understanding its role is essential before you invest in a circuit board recycling plant.

This guide explains what water process equipment is, why circuit board recycling needs it, and how it fits into a complete line. We will walk through the machines involved, what they actually do, and the practical points to consider when planning a wet separation line for PCB scrap.

Why circuit board recycling needs water at all

Circuit board recycling can be done with dry separation or with wet separation. Dry processes rely on air flow, vibrating screens and electrostatic fields to sort crushed materials by density and conductivity. They work well for many feeds, but they can leave fine metal dust trapped inside the non-metallic fraction. Wet processes take a different route: crushed PCB material is mixed with water, and because metals are heavier than the resin and fibreglass around them, the water helps carry the light fraction away while the heavy metals sink and settle. This makes wet separation especially effective for recovering fine copper powder that a dry system might miss.

Where water process equipment comes in is at the two ends of that operation: preparing the water and cleaning it afterward. The water used for separation does not stay clean. It picks up fine resin dust, fibreglass particles and trace amounts of metal, so it has to be recirculated and treated before it can be reused or safely discharged. The machines that do this job are the water process equipment of the line.

Two main jobs of water process equipment

In a practical PCB recycling line, water process equipment performs two distinct functions.

1. Driving the separation itself

The separation stage uses water to split the crushed board into a metal-rich fraction and a non-metal fraction. A wet metal separator feeds a stream of crushed PCB material into water, where the heavy copper and other metals sink and are collected, while the lighter resin and fibreglass stay suspended and are carried to a dewatering screen. Many suppliers offer machines designed around this principle. 2. Treating and recycling the process water

The water looping through the separator collects suspended solids and may pick up metals, so it needs to pass through treatment before it returns to the separator or leaves the plant. A typical arrangement uses settling tanks to drop out coarse solids, then a filter press to separate the remaining sludge so the clarified water can be recirculated. This does two things at once: it cuts fresh-water consumption, and it prevents metal-laden fine dust from being released into local waterways. A well-designed water loop can recycle most of the water used in the line instead of continually drawing fresh supply.

How a wet circuit board recycling line fits together

To picture where circuit board recycling equipment sits, it helps to follow the material in order. Scrap boards are first broken down with a fine crusher and high-speed grinder into small uniform granules. Those granules are fed into the wet separator, where water washes the metal content out of the resin and fibreglass. The recovered metal slurry is dewatered, dried and collected as copper powder ready for sale or further refining. Meanwhile, the water and the non-metallic dust move to the treatment stage: coarse solids settle out, the remaining sludge goes through a filter press to become a dry cake, and the cleaned water returns to the separator. Temperature and particle size make a real difference here, which is why controllable feeding and consistent crushing are important steps before separation begins.

Shared washing and treatment equipment across recycling lines

Water process equipment is not unique to PCB recycling. The same settling, filtration and recirculation components are used in other wet recycling lines, such as lead-acid battery recycling, where acidic wastewater from the breaking and separating stage needs neutralising and filtering. In a circuit board plant the focus is on removing fine non-metallic dust and metal fines, but the underlying principle is the same: separate the water from the solids, treat it, and put it back to use.

Practical points to consider before choosing water process equipment

  • Match capacity to your daily input. Wet lines are sized by throughput, from compact 500 kg/hour units to 2000 kg/hour plants. Choose equipment that matches the tonnage you actually receive so you are not under- or over-invested.
  • Ask whether the separator can handle assembled boards. If your scrap includes boards with components still attached, a water metal separator rated for populated PCB waste is a better fit than a unit designed only for bare boards.
  • Plan the water treatment loop up front. A settling tank and filter press should be part of the design from the start, not an add-on, because the water loop affects both running costs and environmental compliance.
  • Check what support the supplier provides. Crushing, separation and water treatment need to work together reliably, so a supplier who offers installation, commissioning and technical support is valuable, especially for a turnkey plant.
