How to Choose the Right E-Waste Recycling Equipment for Your Business

How to Choose the Right E-Waste Recycling Equipment for Your Business
A practical guide to investing in battery, cable, and circuit board recycling systems that deliver real returns.
The global surge in electronic waste is impossible to ignore. Every year, millions of tons of discarded batteries, cables, and printed circuit boards pile up in landfills or informal recycling sites. For entrepreneurs and established recyclers alike, this represents both an environmental challenge and a significant business opportunity. The key to capturing that opportunity is choosing the right equipment — machines that are efficient, reliable, and matched to the materials you plan to process.
At San Lan Technologies, we have spent over 15 years designing, manufacturing, and commissioning recycling plants across more than 21 countries. This guide shares what we have learned about selecting equipment that actually works on the factory floor.
Understanding Your Material Streams
Before you invest in machinery, you need a clear picture of your feedstock. Different waste streams require entirely different processing lines. Trying to process lithium batteries on a lead-acid line, for example, is inefficient and potentially dangerous. The three most common e-waste streams for commercial recyclers are batteries, cables, and printed circuit boards.
Lead Acid Battery Recycling: A Proven Revenue Stream
Used lead acid batteries (ULAB) remain one of the most recycled products on the planet. A well-designed lead acid battery recycling equipment line can break and separate batteries into four distinct outputs: lead paste, lead grids, plastic casings, and acid. Each of these has resale value.
San Lan's lead acid battery recycling plants handle capacities from 1 to 10 metric tons per hour. The process starts with a hydraulic battery cutter that splits the battery and drains the acid safely. From there, a breaking and separation system classifies the material. Downstream, options include a de-sulfurization unit to treat lead paste, a rotary furnace or blast furnace for smelting, and a refinery kettle to produce 99.999% pure lead ingots. We also supply air pollution control systems and water treatment plants to keep the operation compliant with environmental regulations.

Key consideration: Lead recycling is energy-intensive. Look for systems that include de-sulfurization and near-infrared heating options, which can cut energy use by 30–50% compared to traditional methods.

Lithium Battery Recycling: Capturing the EV Boom
As electric vehicles and consumer electronics multiply, spent lithium-ion batteries are becoming a major feedstock. A modern lithium battery recycling plant recovers black mass (containing nickel, cobalt, and graphite), copper, aluminum, and plastic separator film.
San Lan's lithium battery recycling lines process 500 to 2,500 kg per hour through a sequence of discharging, pre-crushing, secondary granulation, and black powder separation. Magnetic separation removes ferrous metals, while air separation and screening refine the fractions. Because lithium batteries can vent toxic gases if mishandled, we equip every plant with a dedicated air pollution control system that neutralizes harmful emissions before they reach the atmosphere. A plastic pneumatic conveying system and hydraulic briquetter then compress the separator film into dense blocks for easy transport.
Circuit Board and Cable Recycling: High-Value Metal Recovery
Printed circuit boards (PCBs) and scrap cables contain concentrated copper, precious metals, and aluminum. With the right setup, these materials can yield higher margins than bulk e-waste.
San Lan offers both dry and wet circuit board recycling equipment. Our dry-separation plants use air classifiers, vibrating screens, electrostatic separators, and pulse dust collectors to achieve copper powder purity of 96–98% with no water pollution. Capacities range from 300 kg/hour up to 2,000 kg/hour. For operators who prefer wet separation, we also supply water-metal separator systems that can handle PCB waste even with components still attached.
For cable recycling, our granulators and wire strippers separate copper and aluminum from plastic insulation. Compact models like the WCD-200C suit small yards, while larger plants such as the WCD-1200S handle industrial volumes. Pre-choppers and single-shaft shredders prepare thick or multi-core cables for the granulation stage.
What Separates a Good Supplier From a Great One
Buying recycling equipment is not like buying a standard machine tool. You are purchasing a system that must integrate mechanically, electrically, and environmentally. Here are the factors that matter most:
  • Experience with turnkey projects: A supplier who has delivered complete EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) projects will foresee integration problems before they happen.
  • Custom design capability: No two recycling yards are identical. Your supplier should adapt layouts, capacities, and environmental controls to your site and feedstock.
  • Post-sale support: Installation, commissioning, and operator training are where many projects succeed or fail. Ask whether the supplier provides on-site support.
  • Downstream assistance: The best partners help you find buyers for your output — whether that is copper rice, lead ingots, or plastic pellets.
San Lan Technologies: Built for Real-World Operations
Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Jiangxi Province, China, San Lan Technologies has grown into a specialist manufacturer of WEEE recycling machines and mining equipment. Our product range covers lead acid battery recycling plants, lithium battery recycling lines, circuit board recycling systems, cable granulators, shredders, CRT cutters, refrigerator recycling plants, motor dismantling machines, hydraulic presses, and metal melting furnaces.
Our technical team includes mechanical engineers with master's degrees and more than 15 years of hands-on experience in e-waste recycling machinery. We have installed plants in Singapore, Colombia, Vietnam, Mexico, Argentina, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, Tunisia, India, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Zambia, Israel, and beyond. That global footprint means we understand local regulations, voltage standards, and material variations.
Beyond equipment supply, we help customers source waste material, connect with investors for plant construction, and find markets for recycled outputs. We also offer bilingual support in English and Chinese, which simplifies communication for international buyers.
Start With the Right Foundation
Choosing recycling equipment is a long-term decision. The right machines will run for decades, adapt to changing feedstocks, and keep your operating costs under control. The wrong ones will drain your budget in maintenance, downtime, and environmental penalties.
If you are planning a new recycling facility or upgrading an existing line, start by mapping your material streams, capacity targets, and environmental requirements. Then talk to a supplier who has actually built plants like yours — not just drawn them on paper.
