What are the key components of refrigerator & ac recycling machines equipment

Every year, millions of refrigerators and air conditioners reach the end of their working life. Left to sit in a landfill, these appliances slowly leak refrigerants that damage the ozone layer, while the steel, copper, aluminum and plastics locked inside them go to waste. A refrigerator & ac recycling machines equipment line turns this problem into a business opportunity: it safely pulls out the hazardous substances first, then recovers clean, sellable materials from what is left. But what actually makes up this equipment? In this article, we break down the key components of a refrigerator and AC recycling line, explain what each one does, and point out what to look for when you are planning your own plant.

A complete recycling line is not a single machine. It is a coordinated system of components that work in a fixed order: refrigerant recovery comes first, then cutting and shredding, then separation of the shredded material into metal, plastic and foam streams. Each stage depends on the one before it. If the refrigerant is not removed before the cabinet is cut open, the gas escapes into the air. If the shredding is not done properly, the separators cannot produce clean material. Understanding these components before you buy helps you build a line that matches your capacity, your budget and your local environmental rules.

1. Refrigerant extraction machine

The first and most important component is the refrigerant extraction machine, also called a refrigerant recycling machine. Refrigerators and air conditioners hold refrigerants such as R134a, R404A, R407C and R410A, which are potent greenhouse gases if they escape. The extraction machine connects to the compressor and pulls the refrigerant out under vacuum, filtering and purifying it so it can be reused in other units or stored safely for disposal.

Take the SD-680 refrigerant extraction machine from San Lan as an example. It uses a dual input design with multi-stage filtration, oil separation and air separation, and it handles the common refrigerants R404A, R407C, R410A and R134A. It recovers liquid refrigerant at up to 50 kg per hour and gas at up to 25 kg per hour, with a 15 kg collection tank, and the whole unit weighs just 75 kg. For operators who want a compact recovery unit, the RRM-650 refrigerant recycling machine performs the same core job of recovering refrigerant from AC and refrigerator compressors.

2. AC compressor cutting machine

Once the refrigerant is out, the compressor itself still holds a lot of copper. An AC compressor cutting machine slices open the sealed compressor shell so the copper coil inside can be pulled out and sold. This is one of the most valuable steps in the whole line, because compressors are among the copper-richest parts of an appliance.

San Lan's compressor cutting machine is driven by three motors: a 1.1 kW lifting motor, a 3 kW hydraulic station and a 3 kW rotary disc. It measures 1.6 m by 0.86 m by 1.11 m and weighs 1300 kg, and it is designed to cut AC and refrigerator compressors so the copper coil can be recovered cleanly. Recovering that copper directly improves the profitability of the whole recycling line.

3. Shredder and pre-chopper

After refrigerant recovery and compressor removal, the remaining cabinet has to be broken down. This is the job of the shredder and pre-chopper. A pre-chopper cuts the bulky shell into large chunks first, then a main shredder reduces those chunks into small pieces so the materials can be separated downstream.

For refrigerator and AC recycling, a four-shaft shredder is often the best choice because it handles tough sheet metal without jamming. San Lan offers the four-shaft shredder IC-1100 with a capacity of 2-3 tonnes per hour and the larger IC-1800 with 4-6 tonnes per hour, plus twin-shaft models in the IC-500, IC-600 and IC-800 range for smaller operations. Choosing the right shredder size is what keeps the rest of the line fed and running smoothly.

4. Separation system

The shredded mix contains steel, copper, aluminum, plastic and polyurethane foam, and the separation system sorts it into clean streams. Three techniques do most of the work:

  • Magnetic separation pulls out ferrous metals such as steel.
  • Eddy current separation repels non-ferrous metals such as copper and aluminum.
  • Air classification lifts the light foam and plastic away from the heavier materials.

In a well-designed plant these steps recover more than 90% of the copper and aluminum and around 95% of the iron. San Lan's RSS-030 refrigerator shredding and separating plant, for example, processes 20-30 units per hour and achieves iron recovery of at least 95%, copper and aluminum recovery of at least 90%, and plastic and polyurethane recovery of at least 90%, with total installed power of no more than 150 kW. Those recovery rates are what turn a pile of old appliances into a steady revenue stream.

5. Air pollution control system

Shredding metal and plastic creates dust, and breaking down foam insulation can release fine particles and gases. An air pollution control system filters this dust and fumes so the facility stays clean and compliant with emission regulations. This component runs continuously alongside the shredder and separator, capturing pollution at the source rather than letting it spread through the workshop. It is a key part of any refrigerator and AC recycling line, especially in countries with strict environmental rules.

6. Auxiliary equipment

Finally, auxiliary equipment keeps the whole line moving. Conveyors transport material between machines, balers compress the separated metals and plastics into dense bales for transport, and storage bins hold the finished streams until they are sold. A hydraulic baler, for instance, is widely used in e-waste recycling plants to compact separated metals and plastics, which cuts logistics costs and makes the recovered material easier to sell to smelters and mills.

How the components work together

Put together, a typical refrigerator and AC recycling line runs like this: the refrigerant extraction machine empties the appliance, the compressor cutting machine recovers the copper-rich compressor, the pre-chopper and shredder break down the shell, the separation system sorts the material, the air pollution control system keeps emissions in check, and the auxiliary equipment packages the output. Every component has a specific job, and skipping any of them either creates an environmental hazard or leaves valuable material behind.

Choosing the right equipment

When you are selecting refrigerator & ac recycling machines equipment, focus on a few practical points. First, match capacity to your expected input: a small operation may only need to process 10-20 units per hour, while a large plant will want 30 or more. Second, check the recovery rates, because higher recovery of copper and aluminum directly increases your revenue. Third, look at power consumption and footprint, since both affect your running cost. Finally, choose a supplier that provides installation, commissioning and after-sales support, because a recycling line is a long-term investment.

As a professional refrigerator recycling equipment manufacturer since 2007, San Lan Technologies designs and builds complete refrigerator and AC recycling lines, from refrigerant recovery through shredding and separation. With customers in more than 20 countries and a technical team that has spent over 15 years working on e-waste recycling machines, the company offers customized design, installation and commissioning as part of its EPC service.

Conclusion

The key components of refrigerator & ac recycling machines equipment - the refrigerant extraction machine, the AC compressor cutting machine, the shredder and pre-chopper, the separation system, the air pollution control system and the auxiliary equipment - each play a specific role in turning end-of-life appliances into valuable materials. Understanding these components helps you build a line that is safe, efficient and profitable.
