What is the processing capacity of a typical refrigerant recycling machine

If you are setting up a refrigerator and AC recycling line, one of the first questions that comes up is how fast the machine can pull refrigerant out of the units you process. The honest answer is that there is no single number. Processing capacity depends on the class of machine, the phase of the refrigerant, and the compressor inside. Here is a practical look at what "processing capacity" really means and what you can expect from a typical refrigerant recycling machine.

What processing capacity actually means

Processing capacity is usually expressed in kilograms per hour (kg/h) or pounds per minute (lb/min). It tells you how much refrigerant the machine can recover from a cooling system in a given time. There is an important catch, though: the same machine has different capacities for liquid and vapor refrigerant. Liquid recovery is always much faster than vapor recovery, because a liquid is denser and far easier to pump. That is why manufacturers list separate figures for liquid, vapor, and push-pull recovery.

Why liquid and vapor recovery rates differ

When a machine pulls refrigerant out of a system, it works in one of three ways:

  • Liquid recovery draws the refrigerant out while it is still in liquid form. This is the fastest method.
  • Vapor recovery draws the refrigerant out as gas. It is slower because the compressor has to move a much larger volume of low-density gas.
  • Push-pull recovery pushes liquid refrigerant out of the system into a recovery cylinder while pulling vapor back in. For large systems holding a lot of liquid, this is the fastest approach.

A typical portable unit might recover liquid at 6-10 lb/min but only 0.5-1.5 lb/min in vapor mode. That gap is huge, and it is the main reason the same job can take minutes or hours depending on how it is done.

Typical capacity ranges by machine class

Portable machines for HVAC technicians. These are the compact units carried in service vans. Liquid recovery is typically around 6-10 lb/min (roughly 160-270 kg/h), vapor recovery around 0.5-1.5 lb/min (roughly 14-40 kg/h), and push-pull liquid recovery can reach 11-20 lb/min. They are built for jobs like servicing a home AC or a restaurant fridge.

Industrial and stationary machines for recycling plants. These are designed for continuous operation. Liquid recovery rates of 50-300 kg/h are common, and push-pull liquid recovery on large systems can go considerably higher. How to match capacity to your operation

The right capacity depends on how many units you process per day. A quick way to estimate: a typical household refrigerator holds roughly 10-15 lbs (4.5-7 kg) of refrigerant, and a window AC holds less. If you run 20-30 refrigerators per hour through a shredding line, you need a machine that can keep up. That is why recycling plants usually pair a stationary recovery machine with a refrigerator recycling equipment line rather than relying on a portable unit.

What else affects real-world throughput

  • Compressor power. Bigger compressors move more refrigerant per minute.
  • Filter condition. Clogged filters slow recovery and wear out the pump.
  • Ambient temperature. Recovery is slower in cold weather because vapor pressure drops.
  • Refrigerant type. Different refrigerants have different densities and pressures, so the same machine shows different rates for R-134a, R-410A, or R-404A.

Choosing the right machine

For an HVAC service business, a portable unit with solid liquid and vapor rates and easy maintenance is usually enough. For a recycling plant processing old refrigerators and AC units by the truckload, a stationary machine with a large collection tank and continuous operation capability is the better fit.
